Create a password-protected virtual drive where you can store files that you want to be hidden, encrypt data using the 256-bit AES algorithm, and automatically close the virtual drive after a custom number of minutes of inactivity

USB Safeguard is a lockdown application designed specifically for helping you create a password-protected virtual drive where you can store sensitive files using the 256-bit AES encryption algorithm. The virtual drive can be placed on your portable storage devices, such as USB flash drive, HDD, SSD, or memory card.

Portable running mode

Given the portable status of this utility, you can get rid of it by simply deleting the files that you have downloaded from the Internet.

In addition, you may store it on any portable media devices and carry it with you. The application does not leave entries in your Windows registry and write configuration data in your computer.

How it works

When you run USB Safeguard for the first time, you are asked to format the drive before running the program. You should perform this step in order to make sure the tool works correctly and the virtual drive is installed smoothly.

You can protect the virtual drive by setting up a master password. A hint may be added for helping you remember the password in case you forget it.

GUI and configuration settings

The GUI is minimalistic and is designed only for allowing you to input the correct password and gain access to your files.

In addition, it hides a few configuration settings under the hood which can be used for selecting the preferred drive letter from a drop-down list, automatically closing the virtual drive after a custom number of minutes of inactivity, as well as automatically closing the drive via a hotkey (CTRL + the current drive letter).

Bottom line

All things considered, USB Safeguard delivers a simple and efficient software solution for helping you keep your private files in a password-protected virtual drive, and can be mastered by all types of users, regardless of their experience level.

Windows only: USB Safeguard is a portable program that encrypts files on your flash drive in case you lose it. It also stores your email or phone number or shreds files in case you lose it.

To get started, download the program and drag it to your flash drive. Launch it from there, and USB Safeguard will prompt you to create a password. Once you do, you can choose to encrypt your entire USB drive or specific files up to 2GB in size—which you can drag and drop into the interface. The app also features several options for what to do with your data if someone tries to access your files unsuccessfully. These actions include leaving the files alone, shredding the data, and more.

The app also has a virtual keyboard available for a little extra security when you're using an untrusted machine. You can also set an email or phone number using the app in case you lose your USB stick, unlike previously mentioned TrueCrypt and WinPT, which don't have those options.

SB drives are incredibly useful tools for any computer users, but they can also pose something of a security risk. The files you store on these removable drives can be freely accessed by anyone that has physical access to the drive and this means that should you misplace it you run the risk of your private files falling into the wrong hands. As well as taking better care of your hardware another way to help protect your files is to grab a copy of USB Safeguard.

This is a tiny program that simply needs to be copied into place – there is no need for installation – and it enables you to add password protection to your USB drive. Once this has been done, the drive is effectively blocked until the correct password is entered. That is really all there is to it. This is an excellent example of a simple program that does its job well and does so without drawing attention to itself.

There are no complicated settings to concern yourself with, all that’s needed is for a password to be set up. AES 256 bits encryption is used to ensure that your data cannot be read until the password has been entered and the fact that the software is compatible with all versions of Windows means that it is ideal for anyone who works with a number of different computers.

The free version of the program can be used with USB drives with a capacity of up to 2GB, but if you want to work with larger drives, you will have to invest in the regular version; this enables you to secure drives of up to 16TB in size.

Verdict:

Simple and effective, this is a great security tool that helps to protect your data.

Thanks to USB flash drives, you can take mostly any data with you if you need to use it on other computers. Unfortunately, they are also very easy to lose, due to their small size. If this happens in a public place, you can only hope that there is no sensitive information to access. USB Safeguard Free can encrypt your flash drive, using the AES 256 bits encryption algorithm. It takes up very little space and it will lock any USB device almost instantly.

The application consists of a single .exe file which is only 100 Kb large and there is no need to go through an installation process. Additional services are not required, so you can run USB Safeguard Free right after you download it. You just need to make sure that you copy the application to your USB device and run it from there.

When you launch the application, a small window will show up on your screen, where you can type and retype your password. After clicking the Lock button, the application will encrypt and hide the contents of your USB drive. It will show up, in Windows Explorer, with a capacity of 104 Kb.

If you access the encrypted drive, you will only find the application's executable. You can unlock your drive by running the file again and typing your password. A few management options are available on a separate window. You can access them by selecting the System Events option, from a pop up menu. They allow you to set the application to lock your drive automatically, when the screen saver starts, when you shut down the computer or on demand, using a shortcut key. It is also possible to provide your phone number or email address, in a different window, in case you lose your USB stick.

Pros:
The application uses a strong encryption algorithm. It will lock your USB drive almost instantly and it takes only one click. It also locks your drive automatically, when certain events occur.

Cons:
Free version works only with USB Flash drive of size max 2 GB!
